I proudly present this print entitled "Gabe's Morel" as my friend, Gabe, was the first to spot this particularly beautiful blonde! It was late spring and we had been searching for elk sheds all day over blowdowns. Hiking for miles and miles with no luck-except for a handful of morels. They have become an obsession of mine over the past few years, collecting as much as 25 pounds in one season. The elusive and ethereal nature of discovering this mushroom is addicting. They are a delicacy with their robust meaty flavor pairing perfectly with venison back strap or simply with butter and garlic. For those of you who have a nostalgia in your heart for this fungi, this piece Is for you!
It took many hours of painting and patience to try to achieve an accurate mycological representation of this special mushroom. It was dizzying at times due to its cavernous structure— many breaks were required! It could be the first and only morel I ever paint, but never say never!
"Gabe's Morel" is in limited edition of 50 numbered and signed prints. Each print measures 9" x 6" with archival ink on watercolor paper. The frames are made of reclaimed cedar, which my neighbor, Bill Sharp, so graciously hand crafted for me again. I chose cedar as it is the type of tree morels find most favorable to grow out of!
